People don’t commonly notice ears, unless they have an unusual appearance. Ears that protrude very far from the head, are very large or have an unusual shape often prompt people to learn more about otoplasty, or ear surgery. Dr. Pap offers otoplasty for patients who want to correct these characteristics that may make them feel uncomfortable.

Improvements from Ear Surgery

Most patients undergo ear surgery between the ages of 4 – 14, as children sometimes endure teasing from their peers. However, adults also elect to reshape or “pin back” their ears back so that their ears are more proportional to their head or become “unnoticeable.”

What to Expect

Dr. Pap usually performs ear surgery under local, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are made on the back of the ear or if it is necessary to make them on the front of the ear, he tries to hide them in the folds whenever possible. Bandages must stay intact until the follow-up visit, which is typically 5 days after surgery. Patients may go home the day or surgery.
